Ennio Calabria was born in Tripoli in 1937 and completed his studies in Rome where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. His first solo exhibition was held at Galleria La Feluca in Rome, in 1958. The following year, his paintings were shown at the 8th Quadriennale of Rome in which he also participated in 1972, 1986 and 1999. In 1961 he founded “Il pro e il contro”, together with painters Attardi, Farulli, Gianquinto, Guccione, Vespignani, and art critics Micacchi, Del Guercio and Morosini. In 1964 he took part in the Venice’s Biennale. In 1979 the Italian Institute of Culture in Wien dedicated to him an anthological exhibition of his prints. Two years later he presented his paintings at the Olivetti centre in Mexico City and, in 1982, at the Aalto Museum of Iyvaskyla (Finland).In 1985, after solo shows in galleries in Rome and Milan, he exhibited at the Gucci’s Gallery in New York, while in 1987 an important anthological exhibition took place in Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome. Later, two years after participating in the International Exposition in Chicago (1992), he exhibited at Palazzo dei Papi in Viterbo. In 2002 a show dedicated to the cycle “La sintassi della strada” was held in Chieti’s Museo Civico, and in 2004 he exhibited a series of portraits of Pope John Paul II in Pescara’s Museo Vittoria Colonna and in Caserta’s Royal Palace. His paintings can be found in many public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Puskin Museum in Moscow, and the Collezione Gucci.
