Aligi Sassu

Aligi_Sassu

Aligi Sassu was born in Milan in 1912. He began to paint when he was still very young and met Munari with whom he took part in the Futurist Movement. His sojourn in Paris in 1934 had a great impact on his work. Here he met Venturi, De Pisis, Léger and began the cafés cycle, in which he shows an interest in daily life. After moving back to Italy, he became one of the promoters of the group “Corrente” within which he proposed an Expressionism based on shape and colour. In the after war period he approached neorealist poetry with artworks which were socially inspired. His main themes later became horses, bullfights and fantasy themes, placed between history and myth. Aligi Sassu also created frescos, sculptures and mosaics, among which are those in the church of Carmine, in Cagliari. He died in Palma de Majorca in 2000.
