Renzo Vespignani

Renzo_Vespignani

Renzo Vespignani was born in Rome in 1924. In the Forties he depicted the ruins and sufferings of post-War Rome with a realistic style and strong, Expressionist traits. In the late Fifties he collaborated with the magazine “Città Aperta” and his desolated suburban scenes acquired abstract suggestions in colour. From 1964 onwards he replaced the violence of gesture and the decay of the pictorial matter with a new, cold dimension, with distant objectivity, which, in some cases reaches a level of chilling violence and crude, photographic precision. He then moved onto different themes, alternating diverse ways of using colour until 1980, when he went back to the early cityscapes using clear trait and prismatic colours which he maintained until the end. Renzo Vespignani died in Rome in 2001.
